The Twin Cities Catholic Chorale with orchestra (TCCC) was blessed when founder Monsignor Richard J. Schuler, selected the esteemed conductor Dr. Robert L. Peterson in 2002 to become his successor and after a period of mentorship, Dr. Peterson became the Director for the 2006-2007 season. Following that crucial period of transition, and thanks in large measure to the vision and leadership of Dr. Peterson, the Chorale has continued to thrive.
With Dr. Peterson retiring at the end of the 2018-2019 Season, we are excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Marc L. Jaros. Marc is Director of Choral Activities at Normandale Community College, a member of the American Choral Director’s Association, and a highly regarded member of the Twin Cities Catholic music community.
Marc has extensive experience performing and teaching the great masterpieces of sacred music. During the selection process, it became evident that, in addition to his accomplished musicianship, he is an excellent communicator with an easygoing manner that brings out the best in TCCC singers and orchestra members.
In Marc’s own words:
“Great music has always been a part of my life, and I am indebted to my parents for listening to classical music at home and bringing me to Orchestra Hall to hear the Minnesota Orchestra…
“As an undergraduate music student at St. John’s University (B.A., 1992), I learned to read Gregorian chant notation while singing with the monastic Schola Gregoriana. At St John’s I sang some of the great masses by Haydn and Mozart and began a lifelong love of the great sacred choral tradition. My graduate studies in Musicology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (MM, 1994) gave me the tools to study and analyze these great works, and my continued graduate work at the University of Minnesota (Ph.D., 2008) allowed me to know how to conduct and teach them.
“[The TCCC Directorship] is a dream job and the chance of a lifetime to conduct the best music in the context of beautiful liturgy in a truly stunning sacred space. To conduct a Mozart Mass, as it was intended to be performed, within the content of Mass — what a rare and amazing opportunity. St. Agnes is one of the few places in the world that does this, and does it regularly!
“I live with my wife April, a mezzo-soprano (M.M. in Vocal Performance University of Minnesota), who is active as a soloist in the Twin Cities. I am her piano accompanist and we perform together regularly. We live in the Lowertown Lofts Artist Cooperative in Lowertown, St. Paul with a reclusive cat named Goose and her three-legged brother Moses.
“I am a voracious reader (with far too many books). April and I love to travel along the North Shore of Lake Superior and try to get up there whenever we can.”
Members of the TCCC and orchestra, along with the Board of Directors and Rev. Mark Moriarty, are thrilled that Marc will be carrying on the long tradition of sacred music at the Church of Saint Agnes as Music Director of the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale!
