Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve: The Coronation Mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Please join us at The Church of Saint Agnes for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve preceded by a very special concert of Christmas music at 11:15 p.m.

The Twin Cities Catholic Chorale with orchestra will perform a one hour concert of Christmas music in English, Latin and German beginning at 11:15 p.m.  The program will include some Saint Agnes favorites like Alle Jahre Wieder, A Tirolese Carol, Stille Nacht, Glorious Are the Things That Are Said of Thee (Hail Mary) composed by Monsignor Schuler. The Chorale has recently added In the Bleak Midwinter and Still, Still, Still to the musical selections.  At the end of the concert, the figure of the Christ Child will be carried to the crib while the choir sings Transeamus  and Gesu Bambino, after which the crib will be blessed.

The Chorale and orchestra will perform Mozart’s festive Coronation Mass at Midnight Mass.  Mozart composed this Mass in 1779 for the 28th anniversary of the coronation of a miraculous painting of the Blessed Virgin and the Infant Jesus that hangs in the Basilica of Maria Plain, located on a hill overlooking the city of Salzburg.   The Twin Cities Catholic Chorale sang Michael Haydn’s Requiem in the basilica in 1974 in memory of the American dead of World War II.  Photographs of the basilica and the miraculous painting may be found at www.mariaplain.at.    The Schola Cantorum will sing the Proper of the Mass in Gregorian chant.  The Coronation Mass has many beautiful passages, short as it is.   The Agnus Dei foreshadows the famous aria, Dove sono in The Marriage of Figaro.

We look forward to seeing you at Midnight Mass and wish you a very blessed Christmas.

The weekly schedule of Chorale Masses is posted here, and printed copies are at the church entrance, along with donation envelopes. The Chorale is a non-profit organization and depends on the generosity of donors. Please send contributions to: Twin Cities Catholic Chorale, P.O. Box 4234, St. Paul, MN 55104.
