Antonín Dvořák, Mass in D

November 12, 2017 @ 10:00 am

Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) composed this famous Mass in D in 1887, originally for soloists, chorus and organ, but in 1892 he rescored the setting for full orchestra.   Dvorak was a practicing Catholic and composed a great deal of sacred music.   This Mass is one of his finest.  Inspired by medieval Czech hymns and melodies, the Mass in D was also influenced by Schubert and Beethoven.  The haunting melodies of this great work will stay with you long after Mass has ended.  Next Sunday is the 1ST Sunday of Advent.  There will be no Orchestra Masses during the penitential season of Advent.   Instead, the Schola Cantorum will present both the Ordinary and Proper parts of the Mass in Gregorian chant. The next Orchestra Mass will occur on Friday, December 25, 2015, at the Christmas Midnight Mass, when the Chorale & Orchestra will present W.A. Mozart’s Coronation Mass, preceded by a concert of traditional Christmas music.  The Twin Cities Catholic Chorale is a non-profit corporation, financially independent of the Church of Saint Agnes and the Archdiocese of Saint Paul & Minneapolis, which depends solely on the generosity of its patrons.  Programs are available at the church entrances and posted on the Chorale web site at www.catholicchorale.org.  Compact discs of music recorded by the Chorale & Orchestra are available in Schuler Hall after Mass, or from the Leaflet Missal Co. at www.leafletonline.com
